II. HOW TO HELP OUT EVEN MORE

6. Call your elected representatives: simply visit http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/ , put in your zip code, and find the appropriate numbers.

Tell them that Dr. Al-Arian is a high-profile political prisoner whom certain members of the Justice Department are trying to unethically and illegally keep imprisoned long past when he should have been left out. Mention that:

          - Dr. Al-Arian has NEVER been convicted of any crime whatsoever;
          - He signed a plea agreement with the government which clearly stipulated that:
                             - he would be deported as soon as possible
                             - he would NOT be required to testify at any other trial.
          - Despite this, a federal judge in Virginia subpoened Dr. Al-Arian last month to testify in a blatant disregard for the terms of the plea agreement
          - Dr. Al-Arian's prison term ended on April 11th --> his imprisonment since then is COMPLETELY ILLEGAL
          - Dr. Al-Arian is clearly being persecuted for his political beliefs.

Ask your representatives to contact the Department of Justice and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and demand that Dr. Al-Arian be released and deported as soon as possible in accordance with the government's plea bargain. Also ask them to contact the chair of the judiciary committee (Senator Leahy for the Senate, Congressman Conyers for the House) and press them to act on this issue.

7. Call the Honorable John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the United States House of Representatives: (202) 225-5126.

Tell him to contact the Department of Justice and the ICE and to demand that Dr. Al-Arian be released and deported as soon as possible in accordance with the terms of the plea agreement.

8. Call the Honorable Senator Patrick Leahy, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the United States Senate: (202) 224-4242

Tell him to contact the Department of Justice and the ICE and to demand that Dr. Al-Arian be released and deported as soon as possible in accordance with the terms of the plea agreement.
